Two teenagers top Haikou Classic qualifier

HAIKOU, China—Chinese amateur Junlin Zhao and Chinese Taipei’s Lawrence Ting each carded a 2-under 69 to top the Monday qualifier and entry into this week’s Haikou Classic. At just age 15, Zhao will play his PGA TOUR Series-China of the season on Thursday while Ting, 19, will compete in his fifth event of 2019.

It was an impressive performance from the two teenagers, who were the only players to shoot under-par-rounds at the difficult Mission Hills Golf Club’s Sandbelt Trails Course, one of 10 courses located at the iconic venue.

The top-nine players at the qualifier earned direct entry into the tournament, while another Chinese amateur, Junyi Tang, survived a four-person-playoff on the fifth extra hole to earn the final spot.

Ting was solid from the start, beginning with birdies on holes 1 and 3 before making a double bogey on 8 for his only mistake of the day. He quickly recovered to card a birdie on hole 11 before adding another on the final hole.

“My putting and my irons were good today except for one bad hole. I hit my driver to the right and then chunked my next shot and three-putted, so I was really upset at myself to do that but besides that, everything was really good,” said Ting, who has his eyes set on a solid performance this week. “I hope I can finish inside the top 10 this week because I’m feeling really good, and I’m looking forward to it. That would be great.”
